Cyclist killed after truck runs over him at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chowk in Jalandhar

A cyclist was killed after being run over by a truck at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chowk in Jalandhar. The cycle rider was hit over by the truck from the driver’s side. The traffic police and PCR took the situation in control and arrested the accused on the spot. Further investigation in underway

Identification of the victim

The deceased has been identified as Ratan Singh, son of Ajit Singh a resident of Basti Danishmanda, near Ambedkar school, Jalandhar. Following the accident, police took custody of the body and shifted it to the Civil Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination. An investigation into the incident has been initiated. According to the information received, Ratan Singh was riding his bicycle from the Nakodar Chowk side when a truck approaching from behind allegedly hit him. The impact was so severe that one of the truck's wheels ran over his head, resulting in his death on the spot.

Identification of the accused

The accused was arrested on the spot and is identified as Mukesh Galhotra, son of Parveen Singh, a resident of Sadar, Gurdaspur. The truck was destined to Football chownk, Jalandhar and was travelling through Guru Nanak Mission Chownk, Jalandhar.  

Statements by ASI Heera lal

Investigating Officer ASI Heera Lal of Division No. 4 Police Station said that a police team reached the spot after receiving information from the control room. The body was taken into custody and sent to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem. The deceased's family has been informed by fetching a number from the found phone. His grandson Abhi was reported about this situation. Further legal proceedings will be carried out after recording their statements

Traffic control

The incident created panic among commuters and passersby at the busy intersection. Traffic came to a temporary halt as people gathered at the scene following the accident. Personnel of the traffic police, who were deployed at the chowk at the time, immediately rushed to the spot and managed to detain the truck driver before he could leave the area. The driver was subsequently handed over to the police of Division No. 4 Police Station for further legal action.

Further investigation

The exact circumstances leading to the accident are being examined, and police are also looking into whether negligence or overspeeding played any role in the incident. Nearby cameras are also being checked as a part of the investigation. Police said the investigation is underway, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings
