Fact Check: Ludhiana at flood risk after Dhussi Dam breach debunked by DC

Amid Punjab Floods, it was reported on Friday that Sutlej has started breaching the Dhussi Bandh in Sasrali colony.

Punjab has been witnessing one of its worst flood in decades after 1988. All 23 districts of the state has been declared flood hit. Over 3.8 lakh people have been impacted and death toll due to Punjab Flood has climbed to 43. The good news is no rainfall alert has been sounded by IMD for the next few days and reports suggest that water has also started to decrease in many flood hit areas.

In the meantime, reports are circulating that Dhussi Bandh in Sasrali, Ludhiana has started to break. It was reported that Sutlej has started breaching the Dhussi Bandh in Sasrali colony.

It was further reported that some youth working on the dam told that about half of the dam has been washed away by water from the Sutlej side and it can crack anytime.

Truth behind the break of Dhussi Bandh break

Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain on Friday appealed to the public not to panic over fake reports of breach circulating on social media, clarifying that no such incident has been reported in the district so far.

 Responding to rumours regarding breach, Jain stated district administration was keeping a close watch on the situation. He added that though the soil has eroded at some places but there is no water breach so far.

 The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that the district administration was fully prepared to deal with any eventuality, with multiple teams of administration, Indian Army, NDRF and villagers are strengthening the bandh here round the clock.

Further, adequate relief centres and essential material already pre-arranged. A district-level flood control room has also been set up at helpline number 0161-2433100.

 Urging people to remain alert and not fall prey to rumors, Jain assured that the Punjab Government and district administration were firmly committed to safeguarding the interests of the public.
