Today, on 17th October, Former Punjab Congress minister Razia Sultana and her husband, former DGP Mohammad Mustafa, were left mourning as their 33-year-old son, Aqil, died following a brief illness in Chandigarh.
Body of Aqil was brought to the government hospital in Sector-6, Panchkula, Haryana, where a postmortem was conducted. Following the procedure, the family took the body to Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, for the final rites.
Aqil was the son of former minister Razia Sultana. His father, Mohammad Mustafa, retired as Punjab DGP in 2021 and later became active in the Congress party. Mustafa has had close ties with Navjot Singh Sidhu and has also served as his advisor.
Aqil, a practicing lawyer in the High Court, was married and had two children, a son and a daughter. According to family members, after the postmortem at the civil hospital, the body was handed over to the relatives, who transported it to their ancestral village in Saharanpur for cremation
Mohammad Mustafa, originally from Harida village in Saharanpur district, also went to Saharanpur after completing the formalities. Aqil’s final rites will take place in his paternal village.
Razia Sultana, Akeel’s mother, has been a cabinet minister in the Congress government of Punjab and was also the party’s candidate in the 2022 Malerkotla assembly elections, where she lost by 21,686 votes to Mohammad Jameel Ur Rahman of the AAP.
Mohammad Mustafa has been awarded five bravery medals and retired on February 28, 2021. After retirement, Sidhu appointed him as his advisor. Mustafa, an IPS officer of the 1985 batch, was once very close to former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh but later had differences. He gained attention when he accused the CM of conspiring against his appointment as DGP of Punjab and even approached the Supreme Court regarding the issue.
Meanwhile few reports stated that preliminary investigations suggest the death may have been due to a drug overdose. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the postmortem report. The family has expressed no suspicion, but police are still gathering information from them.
