Residents of Surya Enclave and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Avenue are set to celebrate this Diwali with renewed hope, as the long-pending handover of both colonies to the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation (MC) nears completion.

On Friday, the MC held a meeting and passed a resolution accepting the transfer of the colonies. The proposal has now been forwarded to the Local Bodies Department for final approval — a move that paves the way for long-awaited civic works and infrastructure upgrades.

The success follows consistent follow-up by Nitin Kohli, AAP’s Jalandhar Central Halka Incharge, and the intervention of Improvement Trust Chairman Ramnik Randhawa, Mayor Vineet Dhir, and MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi. The Joint Action Committee of Surya Enclave and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Avenue also played an active role in ensuring residents’ long-standing demands were finally heard.

Earlier this month, Kohli had written to the Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT) seeking the handover of the colonies to the MC to ensure basic civic facilities for residents. He then pursued the matter with the Municipal Corporation, urging it to take up the issue without delay.

“For years, residents have struggled with broken roads, poor lighting, and irregular water supply,” said Kohli. “The MC has now accepted the resolution and sent it to Chandigarh for final approval. We expect a decision within a week to ten days. Once the MC formally takes charge, all pending works — from road repairs to streetlights and water supply improvements — will be completed promptly.”

Residents hailed the announcement as a long-overdue “Diwali gift.” A resident of Surya Enclave said, “We have been waiting for this for nearly two decades. It’s heartening to see real progress at last.”

Mayor Vineet Dhir assured that the MC is ready to begin development work immediately after state approval. “These are prime residential areas of Jalandhar, and their development will now be our top priority,” he said.
