Winter has firmly settled in across Punjab, and as 2025 draws to a close, everyone’s wondering just how cold it will get when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Today the cities of Punjab especially the areas of Jalandhar and nearby have no sun today. The sky is covered with clouds and roads with misty fog.
Today finally the winters have taken place with full blown. According to forecasts from IMD Chandigarh, AccuWeather, and Apple Weather, the state is gearing up for a moderately cold but stable end to December, with clear skies, light winds, and no major rain systems on the horizon.
IMD’s late-December outlook
The India Meteorological Department says Punjab's day heat should stay near average or a bit under in late December. Most urban spots will hit highs close to 19°C–22°C, whereas lows might drop into the 5°C–8°C range by year-end.
Cold weather temperatures from Himachal and Jammu might add to the nighttime cold especially at Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Amritsar, even Jalandhar is expected to observe a sharper drop in temperatures. Meanwhile, down south-central way, spots such as Bathinda, Patiala, plus Sangrur the places will not observe massive drop in temperatures.
Fog but low visibility issues
Starting late December, around the 28th through early January, thick fog might return at dawn according to forecasts from IMD Chandigarh.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) of Chandigarh unit on Friday issued a yellow alert for dense fog in Punjab. Multiple districts of Punjab have been put on 3-days dense fog alert by IMD Chandigarh. However, Jalandhar and Ludhiana are likely to witness 2-days of dense fog in the coming days.
Poor visibility may hit central northern areas, messing up morning travel by train or car. Because of this, highway drivers should switch on fog lamps while moving slowly on fast roads.
New Year’s eve weather snapshot
As Punjab gets ready for 2026, clouds can be expected in the morning but will fade, leaving room for stars by evening. Early updates suggest:
- Daytime heat on Dec 31 sits near 20°C to 22°C
- At night it gets down to 6°C–8°C in northern and central Punjab; meanwhile, southern areas sit around 8°C–9°C
- Wind’s moving at roughly 10 klicks per hour
- Chance of rain: under 2%
- Moisture: close to 30%–35%
It won't be freezing, but you'll still require a jacket. If you're near open fields or rivers, the breeze from the northwest could make it chillier. A thin sweater probably isn’t enough for the chilling winter of 2025.
Expected weather
Northern Punjab - places like Amritsar, Jalandhar, Gurdaspur - could see temps drop to around 5°C or 6°C, so mornings may feel really cold.
Central Punjab - places like Ludhiana, Kapurthala, Moga - nights feel chilly, roughly 7 to 8°C; now and then, thin fog shows up.
- Southern Punjab (Bathinda, Patiala, Mansa): Nights are a bit milder around 9°C–10°C, though they dip just after January 1.
Rainfall: Nearly zero, keeping up the pattern of a parched December on the flatlands.
A cheerful end of the year
If you're planning for an outing for New Year's Eve, maybe dinner, live music, or outdoor gatherings, the weather in Punjab seems good; there won't be strong rain, barely any breeze, yet a slight cold stays so the wintery feel sticks around.
The temperature could drop so much you grab an extra jacket; still, festivities in Punjab for New Year 2026 are expected to be chill, dry, fresh, and peaceful - just right to end the year on a quiet beat.
It is advisable to check the weather updates around the New year eve on IMD Chandigarh or at AccuWeather, and can be checked on Apple Weather in the last seven days,
Residents are advised to watch closely if anything shifts suddenly, particularly when a cold snap or thick fog warning are issued if any.
