Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Onkar Singh died after being hit by multiple bullets from his service carbine while he was deployed on security duty at the residence of retired Punjab Special DGP Arpit Shukla in Sector 85.
According to the information available, the carbine reportedly fell from his hand and began firing. Seven rounds were reportedly fired from the weapon, six of which hit Onkar Singh, while one round missed. The exact circumstances leading to the weapon discharging are being investigated by the police.
Onkar Singh was immediately taken to the Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police Investigate Firing Incident
Following the incident, police collected evidence from the spot and began examining the carbine and the circumstances in which it fired after falling to the ground. The investigation is aimed at establishing exactly how the weapon discharged.
Body Taken to Native Village
After the post-mortem, Onkar Singh’s body was taken to his native village Khatkar Khurd. Family members, relatives and local residents gathered there to pay their respects.
Cremation held with police honours
His last rites were performed according to religious customs. Punjab Police personnel also gave him a ceremonial salute during the cremation.
Before the final rites, SP Sarbjit Singh and DSP Banga Harjit Singh paid tribute to the deceased ASI. SP met the bereaved family, expressed condolences and assured them that all benefits due to the family from the department would be provided.
