At least 7 districts of Punjab are currently engulfed in floods. Punjab has been on a standstill for the past at least 1 week. The seriousness of the situation can be understand by the fact that all school of the state have remained shutdown from August 27 on Punjab Government's order. Not only this, multiple deaths have been reported due to Punjab Flood as well.

In the meantime, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) of Chandigarh unit on August 31, multiple multiple districts of Punjab on red alert for 'very heavy rainfall'. Jalandhar was also among them.

The city of Jalandhar is witnessing rainfall for at least 8 hours now and many areas of the city has been water-logged.

Punjab Very Heavy Rainfall Red Alert

September 1- Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar and Fatehgarh Sahib on red alert.

Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Moga, Ludhiana, Mohali, Patiala, and Sangrur are on orange alert.

The rest of the districts are on yellow alert.

September 2- Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar on orange alert.

Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Ludhiana, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala. on yellow alert.

September 3- No Alert

IMD issues DOs and DONTs amid red alert

Expected impacts

  • Rise in water level in seasonal streams, rivers and other water channels/ Flash flood Risk.

  • Damage to standing crops.

  • Damage to harvested crops lying in open.

  • Water logging in most low-lying areas.

  • Closure of underpasses.

  • Disruption of Municipal services (Water, Electricity etc)

Preventive measures as suggested by IMD

  • Don’t keep harvested crop in open.

  • Make arrangements for drainage of excess water.

  • Be prepared to move away from flood affected areas.

  • Avoid venturing into water logged areas.

  • Don’t stand near weak structures.

  • Avoid application of Fertilizers and Pesticides.

  • Drive carefully during rain.

  • Don’t go near water bodies

  • Avoid taking shelter in weak structures during thunderstorm.

  • Do not apply irrigation / Chemical spray. Maintain proper drainage of the field and remove stagnant rain water immediately.

  • During a Thunderstorm event

  • Take safe shelters; do not take shelter under trees.

  • Farming operations may be suspended during the event.

Jalandhar City's multiple areas waterlogged after at least 8 hours of rain

Regarding the heavy rain since early morning, Jalandhar DC Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal issued a message for the residents of the district and said that there is no need to panic, the teams of the district administration are on alert.

The rain in Jalandhar city caused such a bad situation that even the posh areas of the city came under its grip. Waterlogging occurred in Model Town, Central Town Defence Colony, Model Town, Adarsh ​​Nagar and other areas.

Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal said that due to continuous rain for the last several hours, water has accumulated at many places in the city and power supply has also been disrupted at some places.
