The Shahkot police scored a major success in their ongoing crackdown against gangs when they arrested a key accused involved in several violent robberies during a police encounter on Friday night. The accused, identified as Jorra Singh, son of Jagdish Singh, resident of Pipli village under Lohian police station in Jalandhar, was overpowered after a chase and brief exchange of fire near Kohad Kalan.

According to police officials, intelligence inputs indicated that Jorra was roaming in the area on a motorcycle. When a police team tried to stop him near Jafarwal village, he rammed into a police vehicle and attempted to flee. During the chase, he allegedly fired at the police with a country-made pistol. The police retaliated, injuring him, after which he was taken into custody. A .32 bore pistol, one live cartridge, a used shell, and a Hero Splendor motorcycle were recovered from him. He was shifted to Civil Hospital, Shahkot, for treatment.

The arrest is linked to a violent robbery on September 23, 2025, when a gang of five armed men targeted a labour camp of a construction company engaged on the Amritsar expressway project at Jam Nagar. Around 11 pm, the suspects stormed the site, threatened labourers at gunpoint, and looted ₹12,000 and mobile phones. When a supervisor’s son, Om Singh, resisted, he was shot in the head and later beaten with rifle butts and other weapons. Police later identified the accused as Sandeep Singh alias Sippy of Ludhiana, Lavpreet Singh alias Laddi of Lohian, Lakhvinder Singh alias Lakhi of Chak Pipli, and Jorra Singh, with weapons ranging from rifles to pistols and knives.

SSP (Rural) Harvinder Singh Virk, said the arrest marks a significant achievement in the campaign against hardened criminals. “The accused is a habitual offender with a long history of serious crimes. His arrest will help in further investigations and in tracking down other gang members,” he said.

Police records show that Jorra Singh has been named in at least 10 criminal cases between 2017 and 2023, including robbery, assault, illegal possession of arms, and NDPS Act violations. Cases were registered against him at Shahkot, Lohian, and Mahitpur police stations.

A fresh case under Sections 109, 311, 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 25/27/54/59 of the Arms Act has been registered at Shahkot police station. Raids are being carried out to arrest his remaining associates.
