In a major move toward women’s empowerment and social inclusion, the Punjab government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has expanded its flagship welfare initiative by offering free bus travel to all women across the state.

The scheme allows every woman—students, professionals, homemakers, and senior citizens—to commute without charge on Punjab Roadways and Pepsu Roadways buses.

The initiative, which benefits millions each day, has significantly increased women’s use of public transport while promoting financial independence and easier mobility.

As part of this larger effort, a dedicated free bus service has now been introduced for girls studying in nearly 200 government schools in Punjab, ensuring safer travel and easing financial pressure on families.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains stated that 10,448 students are currently availing this transport facility, including 7,698 girls and 2,740 boys. He noted that the service, operational in 118 Schools of Eminence as well as other government schools, forms an important component of the broader free bus travel scheme designed for all women in the state.

The comprehensive plan covers all government-operated buses, removing travel-related economic obstacles for women seeking education, employment, healthcare, or social engagement. It has proven especially beneficial for women from lower and middle-income households, helping them save daily travel expenses that can be redirected toward essential family needs.

Many schoolgirls now travel distances of 10 to over 20 kilometers with greater safety and convenience—trips that were previously difficult and expensive, often contributing to school dropouts.

The government bears 80% of the transportation cost, while parents pay a nominal share. Local management of the bus services ensures transparency and community participation.

Chief Minister Mann reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equal opportunities, saying the service not only reduces financial stress but also strengthens the social empowerment of women.

The scheme also benefits thousands of working women, teachers, nurses, and college students. In one example, a woman in Ludhiana saves ₹3,000–4,000 every month on commuting costs and uses the amount for her children’s education.

The school bus program is part of the larger Schools of Eminence initiative, which has upgraded government school infrastructure and significantly improved student enrollment. Experts and social activists have lauded the free bus service as a transformative measure advancing women’s equality, economic inclusion, and educational access.

Punjab’s free bus service is emerging as a powerful model of empowerment, offering practical relief and long-term social impact for millions of women across the state.
