The Punjab government’s innovative initiative, ‘CM Di Yogashala’, has transformed the state’s health landscape and stands as a testament to the people-centric policies of the AAP-led Bhagwant Singh Mann government.
Inspired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s vision, this program is turning yoga into a way of life, helping combat modern health challenges such as stress, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, while contributing to Punjab’s goal of becoming drug-free and healthy.
The scheme’s success is evident in its rapid and unprecedented expansion. Implemented in four phases within a year, it began in April 2023 in four major cities with over 100 instructors conducting more than 500 classes. By June 2023, it had expanded to nine cities, attracting over 50,000 participants.
The third phase in January 2024 covered all urban areas with 1,500 instructors, and the fourth phase, starting in March 2024, extended to villages and blocks. Today, all 23 districts and 146 blocks in Punjab are covered, reflecting the government’s strong administrative will and efficient grassroots implementation.
Currently, nearly 200,000 citizens across Punjab participate in free yoga classes, up from 100,000 in March 2025. Over 4,581 classes are held daily in the mornings and evenings, demonstrating widespread public acceptance and transforming the initiative into a “people’s wave”, guiding Punjab’s citizens toward healthier lives.
The scheme also serves a dual purpose of improving health and generating employment. Under this initiative, 2,630 certified yoga instructors have been appointed, providing youth with meaningful career opportunities and channeling their energies positively.
The program is highly accessible. Citizens can form groups and request a free yoga instructor from the government, who then conducts classes in parks, community halls, or other public spaces, exemplifying “healthcare at your doorstep” at no cost.
The impact on public health has been remarkable. Participants report improvements in managing chronic back, cervical, and knee pain, as well as diabetes and high blood pressure. Mental health benefits such as better sleep, increased energy, and reduced stress and depression are widely acknowledged.
Beyond physical health, ‘CM Di Yogashala’ strengthens the social fabric of Punjab, particularly empowering women and senior citizens in rural areas by bringing health services closer to home.
The initiative also complements the state’s ‘War on Drugs’ campaign, offering youth a positive alternative and enhancing mental resilience for a more harmonious society.
The Bhagwant Singh Mann government’s ‘CM Di Yogashala’ represents a preventive health revolution, promoting health, employment, and social cohesion simultaneously. The program is not only transforming lives across Punjab but also offers a successful public health model for the entire country, highlighting the government’s visionary approach.
