The Jalandhar Police has identified two key locations in the city where speed violation detection cameras have been installed under the first phase of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). The cameras are now in place at PAP Chowk and near Bidhipur Railway Crossing, Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur confirmed.

A total of 16 cameras have been installed at these two sites to track overspeeding vehicles. While the expected speed limit for these stretches is between 60 and 80 kmph, the official notification is still awaited. Police officials said speed limit signboards will soon be placed at both locations to ensure clarity for motorists.

“As of now, e-challans are not being issued against overspeeding because we are still in the process of making the system live. Once the speed limit boards are installed and awareness is created among the public, challans will start being automatically generated,” said CP Dhanpreet Kaur. She added that the Municipal Corporation has been asked to coordinate with the traffic wing to install the signage without delay.

The announcement came as Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav inaugurated the first phase of Jalandhar’s Rs. 42-crore City Surveillance and Traffic Management Project at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) located in Police Lines. With this, Jalandhar has become the second city in Punjab, after SAS Nagar, to introduce the state-of-the-art ITMS network.

The project’s first phase has integrated 142 high-resolution cameras across 13 junctions. These include 102 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, 40 Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras, 83 bullet cameras, four PTZ cameras, 30 Visual Message Display boards, and the 16 speed detection cameras installed at PAP Chowk and near Bidhipur Railway Crossing.

The ITMS is linked to NIC’s VAHAN and SARATHI databases, which will allow automatic challans for overspeeding, red-light violations, and wrong-side driving once the system is fully operational. In its complete rollout, Jalandhar will have a network of 1,003 surveillance cameras, along with emergency call boxes and a city-wide public address system, aimed at easing congestion, improving compliance, and strengthening traffic enforcement.

Police officials said the ITMS is expected to bring discipline to traffic management and enhance safety on Jalandhar’s busy roads once it goes fully live in the coming weeks.
