A journey that currently takes around an hour between Phagwara and Hoshiarpur has been officially targeted at just 30 minutes once the new four-lane highway is completed.
The 48.62-km Phagwara-Hoshiarpur section of NH-344B, being developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, includes bypasses around both Phagwara and Hoshiarpur. The Centre has said the project is designed to provide 100-km/h high-speed connectivity and reduce travel time between the two cities by 50%.
When will the highway be ready?
The latest official data submitted by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to Parliament gives March 30, 2027 as the scheduled completion date and March 31, 2027 as the actual/expected completion date.
The same parliamentary data lists the project's design length as 48.622 km.
So, the latest official timeline is:
Length: 48.62 km
Appointed date: March 31, 2025
Scheduled completion: March 30, 2027
Expected completion: March 31, 2027
Target travel time: Around 30 minutes
Current reference travel time: Around 1 hour
What exactly is being built?
The project involves four-laning of the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur road, including bypasses for Phagwara and Hoshiarpur.
The corridor begins near Jamalpur in Phagwara at NH-44 and connects with NH-503A at Hoshiarpur. The government says the new road will provide faster connectivity between NH-44 and NH-503A and improve traffic movement through the region.
The bypasses are particularly significant because traffic travelling between the two cities will have an alternative to congested urban stretches.
Why the 30-minute target matters
The Centre announced the project with a stated objective of reducing the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur journey from approximately one hour to 30 minutes.
That represents a potential saving of about 30 minutes on a one-way journey, or roughly 50% of the stated current travel time.
For someone making the journey regularly, the cumulative time saving could be considerable. However, the 30-minute figure is an official project target, not a guarantee that every journey will take exactly 30 minutes.
Actual travel time will depend on traffic, entry and exit points, weather, road conditions and traffic behaviour after the highway opens.
Which districts does the corridor cover?
The latest parliamentary project data identifies Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar and SBS Nagar among the districts through which the project passes.
The highway is therefore relevant beyond the direct Phagwara-Hoshiarpur route, particularly for connectivity across the wider Doaba region.
The government has also highlighted improved connectivity to Adampur Airport as one of the benefits associated with the corridor.
March 2027 is the date to watch
As of the latest official data available, March 2027 remains the key deadline for the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur NH-344B project.
If the current timeline is maintained, the new four-lane corridor could transform the approximately one-hour Phagwara-Hoshiarpur journey into a route with an official target of around 30 minutes.
But the final test will come only after the highway opens to traffic: will the promised 50% reduction in travel time translate into real-world journeys? The government's project design and stated target point towards that outcome, while actual travel times will depend on conditions on the road.
