In response to the disastrous flooding in Punjab triggered by relentless heavy rainfall, state BJP chief Sunil Jakhar has urgently written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking immediate central assistance. The letter draws attention to the critical situation unfolding in Punjab, a vital state for India’s food security and economic stability, which has been severely battered by floods worsened by excessive rain in the upper hilly regions.
Jakhar emphasized that the worst-hit areas include the border belt stretching from the Bhoa Assembly constituency to Fazilka, along with districts such as Kapurthala. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings of continued heavy rain, raising fears that the flooding situation may deteriorate further in the coming days.
The BJP leader outlined the extensive damage caused by the floods, including displacement of thousands of families and destruction of vast tracts of essential crops, which jeopardizes both the state economy and the national food supply chain. While acknowledging the Central government’s ongoing efforts through the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and financial aid, he stressed the urgent need for enhanced support to manage the growing crisis.
Jakhar called for deployment of central assessment teams to conduct a thorough evaluation of the ground realities and appealed for the announcement of a special relief package tailored to meet the immediate needs of Punjab’s flood-affected citizens. He underscored Punjab’s strategic importance as a border state and as a key contributor to the nation’s food security, expressing confidence that the Prime Minister would respond decisively.
The BJP chief’s letter follows his recent visit to the severely impacted Ajnala Assembly constituency, where he engaged directly with affected residents to understand their hardships. Criticizing the state government’s response, Jakhar held it accountable for the massive losses suffered in border regions, accusing it of neglect and failure to deliver timely relief.
Jakhar clarified that his intervention is driven by a commitment to flood victims rather than political motives, aiming to hold the government accountable and ensure urgent help reaches those in distress. He conveyed that swift central intervention is crucial to bring hope and relief to thousands of Punjabis grappling with this unprecedented natural calamity.
