Amid the ongoing unrest within the Punjab Congress following the party’s organisational revamp ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Friday expressed concern over the growing dissatisfaction in the party, saying the situation should never have reached its present stage.
Replying to a media query after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi, Randhawa was asked about former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi convening a meeting of senior Congress leaders after the party’s organisational reshuffle.
“It is worth reflecting on the fact that things should not have reached this stage. Holding so many meetings and still not getting satisfied is very unfortunate and sad,” Randhawa said. He further added, “This situation should not have arisen. So many meetings regarding the revamp of the organisation have taken place, yet the lack of satisfaction is a sorrowful matter.”
His remarks come at a time when Channi’s meeting has fuelled speculation over factionalism within the Punjab Congress. The meeting was attended by several senior leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister O.P. Soni, former ministers Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Gurpreet Singh Kangar, Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Gurkirat Singh Kotli, along with former MP Mohammad Sadiq.
Randhawa clarified that his meeting with Amit Shah was unrelated to the Congress’ internal affairs. He said the appointment had been scheduled in advance to discuss Punjab’s deteriorating law and order situation.
The Congress MP said he had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 4, 2026, with a copy to Amit Shah, highlighting concerns over the worsening law and order situation, Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, narco-terrorism and increasing gangster activities in Punjab’s border districts. During the meeting, Randhawa submitted a memorandum to the Home Minister seeking stronger action against the spike in gangster-related incidents in Gurdaspur and other border areas. He said the issues were discussed in detail.
The political developments come amid continuing debate over the Congress leadership reshuffle in Punjab. A day earlier, senior Congress MP Manish Tewari also voiced disappointment after being left out of the party’s newly announced organisational structure, while Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu took a swipe at the Punjab Congress, claiming that many leaders had gravitated towards Channi following the reshuffle
