The residents and citizens of Punjab will enjoy July 31, 2025, as a public holiday as the state will observe the day as Shaheed Udham Singh Martyrdom Day (Shaheedi Diwas of Sardar Udham Singh).

The government of Punjab has announced that the state will celebrate the legacy of the Indian revolutionary Shaheed Udham Singh. It is to be reported that it is expected that Haryana state will also observe a holiday to pay tribute to the legendary fighter.

According to the government officials, on this day, all government offices, schools and colleges will remain closed on July 31, across the state. The holiday will be observed according to the holiday calendar announced by the government of Punjab.

Who was Shaheed Udham Singh?

Udham Singh was an Indian revolutionary who assassinated Michael O’Dwyer in 1940. According to history, he took this step to take revenge against his involvement in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.

July 31 will be marked to pay tribute to his sacrifice and his role in the Indian independence movement.

How did Shaheed Udham Singh die?

Singh was hanged by Stanley Cross at Pentonville Prison on July 31, 1940. His relics are kept at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab. Other organisations also organise marches and garland all the statues of Singh in the city on every July 31, the day of the birth of Singh in Sunam (his hometown).
