Preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections are expected to gather pace as a team from the Election Commission of India (ECI) is scheduled to visit the state on October 27 and 28 and the visit will focus on assessing election preparedness, reviewing security arrangements and checking whether the required arrangements are in place for conducting free and fair polls.
The visit comes months before the current Punjab government's term ends in March 2027. The entire election process, including voting and counting, is expected to be completed before the term expires.
The announcement of the election schedule is being anticipated, but the Election Commission has not announced the dates yet, while speculation suggests that the announcement could come after December 15, with polling potentially taking place in February 2027, however, these dates are not confirmed and will depend on the Commission's decision.
The timeline of the 2022 Assembly elections offers a reference point for the upcoming polls. The Election Commission team visited Punjab on December 15 and 16, 2021. The election schedule was announced on January 8, 2022, around three weeks after the visit.
Voting for the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections took place on February 20, while the counting of votes was held on March 10.
The sequence has drawn attention as Punjab prepares for its next Assembly elections, however, the previous election timeline does not confirm when the 2027 schedule will be announced.
Ahead of the upcoming visit, teams of officials have also been sent from Delhi to assess election-related preparations in different districts and their reports will help the Election Commission review the arrangements and identify gaps that need to be addressed before polling.
The two-day visit will cover several aspects of election management, including electronic voting machines, voter lists, polling station facilities, police preparedness and measures to prevent the use of money or other inducements to influence voters and the Commission is also expected to meet political parties and senior state officials before reviewing the overall preparedness for the elections.
