A 28-year-old youth from Jabbowal village in Begowal town of Punjab’s Kapurthala district was allegedly shot dead in the United States, leaving his family and villagers in deep shock. The deceased has been identified as Gurdeep Singh.

According to information available, Gurdeep had travelled to the US around 10 years ago in search of a better future. He was reportedly working as a pizza delivery worker in New York.

Gurdeep was on his way to make a pizza delivery on Richmond Street in New York when armed assailants allegedly opened fire on him. He sustained gunshot wounds and died in the incident. News of his death triggered grief among his family members and residents of his native village.

Family Had Borrowed ₹30 Lakh to Send Him Abroad

Gurdeep’s father, Piara Lal, said that the family had faced considerable financial difficulties after sending him to the US. According to the family, Piara Lal had borrowed ₹30 lakh at interest to finance his son’s journey abroad.

Despite facing difficulties during his initial years in the US, Gurdeep continued to work hard. His family said he had been working tirelessly in the hope of improving their financial condition and providing a better life for his loved ones

Gurdeep was unmarried. His family runs a DJ business in the village. They had hoped that his hard work abroad would help fulfil the family’s dreams, but his death has left them devastated.

Family Appeals to Governments for Assistance

The family has made an emotional appeal to the Punjab and Central governments to provide all necessary assistance to bring Gurdeep’s mortal remains back to India at the earliest.

They have also urged the authorities to coordinate with the US administration for a fair investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible for Gurdeep’s killing are arrested and given strict punishment.

Villagers have also appealed to the government to extend financial and logistical assistance to the bereaved family and make every possible effort to repatriate Gurdeep’s body to India.

For the family, the tragedy is not only the loss of their son but also the crushing of their hopes for a better future, compounded by the debt incurred to send him abroad.

The family is now waiting for Gurdeep’s mortal remains to be brought back to India and for further action by the US authorities in the case.
