100 iPhone 17s already ordered, Distribution to be held in public
An unusual giveaway promising to put hundreds of iPhones in the hands of the public is set to take place in Punjab, with Amritsar-based businessman and influencer Rakesh Trehan, popularly known as ‘Raja D King’, announcing an ‘iPhone Langar’ on September 22.
Trehan said he has already ordered 100 iPhone 17 units and has discussed arrangements for distributing up to 1,000 iPhones. The giveaway will be conducted live in the presence of the media and members of the public.
Only iPhone 17 and above, says Trehan
According to Trehan, the giveaway will be limited to iPhone 17 models and above, while iPhone 16 models will not be included.
The event was initially announced in August, but the final date was decided on Friday, coinciding with the start of iPhone 18 sales in India.
‘Jai Mata Di’ is the eligibility criterion
Trehan said a WhatsApp group has been created for people interested in the giveaway. Winners will reportedly be contacted by phone and informed that they have been selected to receive an iPhone.
Explaining the eligibility condition, Trehan said members of the group must write ‘Jai Mata Di’. He added that the winners would be selected from among those who have written the phrase.
Chandigarh and Mohali first, 10 more cities to follow
The September 22 event is initially aimed at residents of Chandigarh and Mohali. Trehan said that 10 additional cities will be announced on the day of the event.
The scale of the proposed giveaway has drawn attention online, particularly because the announcement comes amid intense consumer interest around Apple's latest iPhone launches. Whether the giveaway ultimately reaches the proposed figure of 1,000 devices will become clearer when the distribution takes place on September 22.
