A car belonging to retired Lieutenant General D.S. Hooda was hit by a Punjab Police vehicle that was part of a VIP convoy on the Zirakpur flyover near Mohali. Hooda alleged that the collision was deliberate.
The retired General and his wife narrowly escaped the accident, though their car was badly damaged. On a social media post, he tagged Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and DGP Gaurav Yadav on social media, demanding immediate action. Meanwhile, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav expressed regret over the incident and said he had spoken to Special DGP R.S. Rai, assuring appropriate action.
Hooda’s Account of the Incident:
In his post, General Hooda mentioned that around 4 p.m., he was driving with his wife on the Zirakpur flyover. Two Punjab Police escort vehicles with sirens blaring were accompanying a VIP convoy heading towards Ambala.
He said he slowed down to let the first vehicle pass, but due to heavy traffic, it took around three extra seconds for the convoy to move. This reportedly angered the driver of the escort jeep behind them, who overtook from the left and then suddenly swerved right, intentionally ramming into the front of Hooda’s car.
Driver Fled After Collision:
After hitting his vehicle, the police jeep did not stop and sped away. Hooda wrote that the act was clearly intentional. Not only did it damage his car, but it also put their safety at risk on a busy road. He said such arrogance and negligence from those meant to uphold the law tarnish the image of the police force. Hooda expressed hope that strict action would be taken soon.
Support and Reactions:
Lieutenant General Rakesh Sharma reacted to Hooda’s post, saying, “It must have been a very terrifying experience, Sir! Hope you and Mrs. Hooda are safe.”
Former Punjab Special Chief Secretary K.B.S. Sidhu also commented, “We sincerely hope that responsibility for this reckless act is fixed at the earliest.”
DGP Gaurav Yadav stated, “We deeply regret the distress caused to you and your wife by this unfortunate incident. Such behavior is unacceptable and goes against the core values of Punjab Police.”
