Punjab Congress leaders have slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of Rs 1600 crore as flood relief, calling it grossly inadequate and an insult to the people’s suffering.
Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said the package was “not even peanuts” compared to the massive destruction caused by the floods. “This amount is a drop in the ocean. In Hindi we say, oont ke mooh mein jeera. Punjab has suffered damages worth thousands of crores, yet the Centre has turned a blind eye,” he said. He added that Punjabis had high expectations from the Prime Minister’s visit but were “deeply disappointed” once again.
Jalandhar Cantt MLA and former hockey captain Pargat Singh also took to 'X', describing the relief as an insult to those who have lost homes, crops, and livelihoods. “Entire villages are under water, crops buried under sand, families displaced, yet the Prime Minister values this destruction at loose change. When thousands of crores are lost, offering crumbs is not relief — it’s abandonment,” he said.
Both leaders stressed that Punjab needed a bold rescue and rehabilitation plan, not a token headline. “This is not compassion, it is callousness. Punjabis are resilient, but they should not feel that their suffering means so little to the Union government,” Singh added.
They urged the Centre to reassess the scale of the disaster and extend substantial financial assistance that truly matches the magnitude of the crisis.
