A situation unfolded at Chitkara University after reports began circulating that two female students were allegedly missing from the campus. The information spread among students and on social media, following which police officials reached the university and spoke with students and the administration.
According to police, some students approached them with information that two girls were missing. However, during the initial interaction, the students could not provide the names or identities of the two girls. Police said they did not have any specific details confirming who the allegedly missing students were.
With the information still unverified, police officials began gathering details from students and the university administration. DSP Banur and other senior police officials reached the campus and spoke to the students as well as university authorities to understand what had happened.
Police said a rumour regarding two girls being missing was circulating on the campus. Posts related to the alleged disappearance also appeared on social media. However, police have not confirmed the identities of any missing students or established that two students had actually disappeared.
As per reports, Chitkara University registrar Col Rakesh Sharma interacted with the protesting students, Sharma, however, categorically denied that any such incident took place at the university.
"No such incident has taken place at the university. These are all rumours," he said.
The reports nevertheless led to a large gathering of students on the university campus. A protest was held late at night after the information spread among students. During the protest, reports also emerged of vehicles being damaged.
Police subsequently intervened and continued to assess the situation on campus. Officials said the students' complaint had been accepted and that the entire matter would be investigated. Police will verify the information provided by students and check the facts surrounding the reports before reaching any conclusion.
Importantly, DSP Banur said that all students at the university are safe. Police also appealed to parents not to worry, stating that the situation on the campus was under control.
At present, the key issue remains the verification of the original reports. Police have not confirmed the identities of the alleged missing girls, nor have they established the circumstances behind the claims circulating among students and on social media.
The police investigation will focus on finding out what led to the reports, whether any students were actually unaccounted for and what happened during the subsequent protest. Until the verification process is completed, the claims circulating on social media remain unconfirmed.
