Bank customers across Punjab should plan their branch visits in advance as all bank branches in the state will remain closed on Friday, September 4, 2026, on account of Janmashtami, which marks the birth of Lord Krishna.
The holiday is listed in the Reserve Bank of India’s bank holiday calendar for Punjab and will apply to branches of both public-sector and private-sector banks.
Janmashtami is one of the major religious festivals celebrated across India. The festival marks the birth of Lord Krishna and is observed with prayers, devotional programmes, religious ceremonies and celebrations at temples and homes.
As the festival falls on a Friday this year, customers who need to visit their bank branch for services such as cash deposits, cheque-related work, account services or other physical banking transactions are advised to complete their work beforehand.
The bank holiday will primarily affect physical branch operations. Customers will still be able to access most digital banking facilities, including UPI, internet banking, mobile banking and ATMs, subject to normal service availability.
Routine digital transactions can therefore continue even while branches remain shut.
The September 4 closure is particularly important for customers with urgent banking work because the holiday falls on a Friday, immediately before the weekend.
While digital services will continue to provide access to routine banking facilities, branch-dependent services may have to wait until branches reopen.
Customers are therefore advised to check their bank’s schedule and complete any important in-person transactions ahead of the holiday to avoid last-minute inconvenience.
