The weather in Punjab has been witnessing significant changes for the past few days, as a gradual rise in the mercury can be felt across the state. India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh, reports that the weather patterns in Punjab have been switching and amid this shift a question keeps popping up among the residents across the state: is winter going to make a comeback, or will spring take over soon?

Morning and evening chill persist

While the overall temperature in the state has seen a significant and observable rise in the temperature, yet chill persists during the early morning hours and late evening hours. While the chill at isolated hours persist, the detailed analysis of the current meteorological data indicates that Punjab is witnessing a seasonal transition rather than a renewed cold wave.

Significant past weather observations

As per the latest data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh, very light rainfall at some isolated places of Punjab was recorded. In Amritsar, dense fog was recorded at some isolated places in the district. As per the latest reports, the highest maximum temperature in state was recorded 25.6°C in Ludhiana, while Amritsar recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 8.7 °C in the state. Moving forward into the next week, no rainfall prediction has been made by the IMD, Chandigarh and the weather is likely to be dry over Punjab and Haryana in the coming days.

What to expect in the coming week?

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh, a gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2 to 3°C is expected to be observed during the next seven days. Despite this, the perception of cold has strengthened in recent days. Meteorologists attribute this to radiational cooling, a process where clear skies during the night allow accumulated daytime heat to escape rapidly into the atmosphere. This results in sharper temperature drops just before sunrise. Additionally, light north-westerly winds have contributed to a mild wind-chill effect, making mornings feel colder than the actual recorded temperature.

It is noteworthy, that there has not been any official cold wave alert in the state by the IMD as of now.

Significant shift from January to February

A noticeable contrast can be observed between the weather patterns of January, where dense fog and suppressed sunlight kept the daytime temperatures below 20°C for extended periods to now moving into February where consistent sunlight and longer daylight hours are being observed.

Arrival of spring

The current weather pattern indicates that Punjab is currently entering a transitional phase between late winters and early spring. Such fluctuations are common during February, when atmospheric systems shift and temperature contrasts between day and night remain noticeable.
