Phillaur–Nawanshahr Road was blocked on Tuesday evening by angry protestors. A woman died in a midnight accident near Phillaur, Jalandhar, due to water-logged road. Angered by this, locals came onto the streets and blocked the road demanding action against the responsible officials.
Police from the Phillaur police station arrived to try to calm the situation. When the situation persisted, the matter was brought to the attention of the administration.
Sister-in-law of deceased woman said, "We came in the market area to buy some goods. The truck rammed the motorcycle from behind. Due to water-logged road, the bike skidded on the road. The truck coming from behind ran over the woman. The reason of the accident is water-logged road. If road was not water-logged, the bike could have gained control. The woman was a single mother of 14-year-old boy. They are resident of Indira Colony."
The protesting villagers demanded immediate action and a permanent solution to the waterlogging issue on the road. They have also refused to allow the body to be taken from the spot until their demands are addressed.
There are reports that suggest that Block Development Officer (BDPO) of Phillaur was suspended for the accident caused by the water-logged road. The Phillaur police sent the woman's body to the hospital for a post-mortem examination late last night. The woman's son, who was riding the bike, is safe and has suffered minor injuries.
The Naib Tehsildar took action and calmed the people.
