Onam 2022: All About the 10-day harvest festival of Kerala
Atham marks the preparation of the day Mahabali returns to his kingdom. The first layer of Pookalam (made of yellow petals) gets added at the base
On the second day, two more layers of orange and yellow flowers get added to the Pookalam. Malayalis all across the world tend to visit temples on this day
On the third day, people buy new clothes and gift jewels to their family members. One more layer of flowers gets added to the layer of Pookalam
On the fourth day, Malayalis stock up their houses with the fresh harvest of the season. Families prefer a variety of dishes to mark the special day.
The fifth day brings the famous boat race competition organized on the Pamba river. On the 6th day, visit their ancestral homes and temple to seek blessings and fresh flowers are added to the Pookalam.
On the 7th day, temples all over Kochi begin to offer Onasadya. Various folk dances are performed at various places in Kerala
The 8th day commences by placing clay idols of Mahabali and Vamana in the middle of the Pookalam
On the 9th day also known as 1st Onam, a variety of dishes using fresh vegetables and fruit of the new harvest is prepared.
