Supreme Court Judges in line to assume the office of CJI

Justice Sanjiv Khanna

Once the tenure ends for Justice DY Chandrachud as the top judge Justice Sanjiv Khanna will fill his shoes in 2024, and will serve a period of six months. He was elevated to the SC in 2019, after serving 14 years as a Judge in the Delhi High Court.

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai

In 2025, Justice B R Gavai will serve as the CJI for a little over six months. He was elevated to the SC in 2019. Justice Gavai is the first Scheduled Caste Judge to serve at the Supreme Court in 9 years, after Justice K.G. Balakrishnan who retired in 2010.

Justice Surya Kant

Justice Surya Kant will be the Chief Justice of India for 1.2 years between 2025 and 2027. He was elevated to the SC in 2019, along with his predecessor, when he retires in 2027, Justice Surya Kant will have served at the SC for over 7 years.

Justice Vikram Nath

Justice Vikram Nath was among CJI Ramana’s nine appointments in August 2021. He will assume office for seven months in 2027. It was during his tenure as Chief Justice from 2019-2021 that Gujarat High Court owned the honor to live stream its proceedings.

Justice Bangalore Venkataramiah Nagarathna

India will have its first women Chief Justice in B.V Nagarathna, however, she will only have a tenure of just 36 days starting September 24th, 2027, which will be the third shortest tenure of CJIs. Daughter of Justice E.S. Venkataramiah, who held office as the 19th CJI.

Justice Pamidighantam Narasimha

Elevated to the post of Judge from the bar in November 2021, Justice P Narasimha will serve as the top judge from 2027 for 19 months. A former Additional Solicitor General of India, well known for representing the Bhagwan Shri Ram Virajman in the Ayodhya dispute.

Justice Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala

Justice J. B Pardiwala will become the CJI for a period of two-year term starting in 2028. In 2015, 58 Rajya Sabha MPs passed an impeachment motion for his unconstitutional remarks on the reservation, however, no action was taken.
