The Crime Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation in the Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath assault case. According to the preliminary reports, the CBI officials have registered two separate FIRs in the case.
The information has revealed that the Army Colonel and his son were allegedly assaulted outside an eating station in Patiala at the start of 2025.
The two FIRs have been registered from both sides - Colonel Bath and the Dhaba owner. Accordingly, the FIR has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and one of the charges also includes charges under attempted murder.
The reports have claimed that this case was transferred to the CBI after the directions by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which noticed that the Chandigarh Police was not investigating the matter diligently and there were loopholes in the investigation. Following this order by the High Court, from now onwards, the Special Crime Unit will probe the incident.
Certain reports have claimed that Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath and his son Angad were allegedly bitten by 12 policemen outside an eatery near Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. During this act of assault, the Colonel suffered a fractured arm, whereas his son suffered severe head injuries.
Reportedly, the first FIR in the matter was registered on March 15 at the behest of a dhaba owner, and following the same, another FIR was lodged on March 22. Notably, the investigation was conducted, favouring the police personnel.
The family of the victims has claimed that two were brutally attacked, and the attackers also tried to intimidate them to withdraw their case.
The initial investigation was conducted by Punjab Police; later, it was given to a Special Investigation Team. However, due to dissatisfaction with the investigation, the High Court transferred the case to the CBI on July 16, 2025.
