In a massive development, Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday announced Vice President Election Schedule. As per ECI, voting to elect India's New Vice President will take place on September 9 if necessary.

However, a few media portals reported that Dhankhar's resignation reason lies to his proximity with Congress and his acceptance of motion to impeach Justice Yashwant Verma. Last date for making nominations- August 21
Date for the Scrutiny of nominations- August 22
Last date for the withdrawal of candidatures - August 25
Date on which a poll shall, if necessary, be taken- September 9
Hours of poll- 10 am to 5 pm
Date on which counting, if required, shall be taken- September 9
How is Vice President of India elected?
The Vice President is elected by the Electoral College, which includes all the elected and nominated members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The notification by the Election Commission contains the dates of nomination, voting and result.
The candidate has to file the nomination papers with signatures of at least 20 MPs as proposer and 20 MPs as supporter.
Only MPs are voters. Therefore this campaigning takes place in a limited area. Candidates and their supporting parties are involved in the campaign.
Every MP marks the candidates in the order of priority (1, 2, 3...) on the ballot paper.
To win, a simple majority (more than 50%) of the total valid votes has to be obtained. The Returning Officer declares the result.
NDA enjoys a majority in Parliament. Out of a total of 542 members in Lok Sabha, NDA has 293 and I.N.D.I.A. alliance has 234 members.
Out of the effective number of 240 members in Rajya Sabha, NDA has the support of about 130 and I.N.D.I.A. alliance has the support of 79 MPs.
Overall, NDA has the support of 423 and INDIA block has the support of 313 MPs. The remaining members are not associated with any camp.
