Punjab: COVID malpractice leads to suspension of the hospital

Jalandhar, May 18: Adopting tough stance against a privatehospital for malpractices in the treatment of a Covid-19 patient, DeputyCommissioner Ghanshyam Thori on Tuesday suspended Level-II covid care facility(for new admissions) at Shamsher Hospital after a preliminary report submittedby the health authorities flagged malpractices and overcharging. 

Divulging the details, the DC said that a complaint wasfiled by the family members of a patient who died in the Hospital's covid careward, following which an enquiry was marked to Deputy Medical CommissionerJalandhar, who recommended suspension of Level-II facility for new admissions.The Deputy Commissioner further formed a four-member committee to probe other discrepanciessuch as overcharging, drug procurement, distribution, and others as alleged inthe complain within a period of three days.

As per complaint, a patient was rushed to Samsher Hospital,where he was admitted in Level-II covid care ward without RTPCR test. Thepatient was also given treatment which is only given in Level-III that too inconsultation with expert group. The complainant also levied allegations ofovercharging of medicines and injections, which was also a matter ofinvestigation. The Deputy Commissioner has directed committee to furnish inquiryon all such points and submitted a detailed report within three days. Thecommittee comprises Sub Divisional Magistrate-1, Civil Surgeon, Zonal LicensingAuthority, and Dr. Ashoke Senior Medical Officer, Wadala. 

Deputy Commissioner reiterated the firm commitment toproviding quality treatment to Covid-19 patients besides warning suchhealthcare institutions resorting to malpractices in this time of crisis.
