The Conjuring: Last Rites is inspired by chilling true events of Ed and Loraine Warren's encounter with Smurl Haunting Case. Jack and Janet Smurl who lived with their daughters and parents claimed that their family was tormented by demonic entity from 1974 to 1989.
They used to live in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, which they claimed that became the center of demons.
Despite multiple exorcism attempts, the Smurl family continued to be tormented. Finally, they went public. In 1986, Ed and Lorraine Warren got involved in order to rescue the Smurl family from the demon's torment.
After their investigation about the paranormal happenings, the Warrens reached to a conclusion that a total of 4 entities have haunted the house- an old woman, a violent young girl, a deceased man, and a demon.
Ed recounted his experience to the Times Leader in 1986, saying he sensed the entity immediately. “I did not have to wait moments when the very thing I felt was a drop in temperature of at least 30-some degrees,” he said. “Then, a dark mass formed about three feet in front of me. There was a sound in back of me, I could hear rattling around.”
According to Screenrant, Ed and Lorraine retired from active paranormal investigations after the Smurl haunting case. After the Smurl case, the Warrents wrote a book and got involved in teaching until Ed suffered a stroke. Lorraine stayed with Ed until he passed away a few years later, then followed suit not long after.
Talking about book, the Smurl family co-authored a book with the Warrens in 1986 titled The Haunted: One Family’s Nightmare, chronicling their horrific experiences.
