As Punjab slowly moves towards 2027 Assembly elections BJP is trying to strengthen its position in state and the party recently appointed former Barnala MLA Kewal Singh Dhillon as new president of Punjab BJP unit and the move was seen as an important step to improve BJP's reach among Punjab's influential Jat Sikh voters.

Kewal Singh Dhillon’s appointment

Kewal Singh Dhillon became first Jat Sikh leader to head Punjab BJP. His appointment was welcomed publicly by senior leaders and many top BJP leaders were present during charge-taking ceremony in Chandigarh however according to political sources and party insiders all may not be well within the party itself.

Groupism in BJP just like Congress

Punjab BJP is currently made up of several groups and leaders who have come from different political backgrounds and political observers say that bringing all these leaders together under one leadership may not be an easy task for the stakeholders.

At present one group is associated with former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar another group is linked to former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh while separate political camps are also believed to exist around former Congress leaders Gurmeet Singh Sodhi and Manpreet Singh Badal.

Apart from them there are BJP's old and core party workers who have been associated with the party for years.

Many leaders who joined BJP from Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and other parties are also seen as a separate group and there is also a group associated with former state BJP president Ashwani Sharma so ultimately political observers believe that managing these different groups and keeping everyone satisfied could be one of the biggest challenges that lies in front of Kewal Singh Dhillon.

Disagreements within the party

Another issue being discussed in political circles is reaction to Dhillon's appointment itself while BJP selected him to strengthen its Jat Sikh outreach some party workers who have been associated with BJP for many years are reportedly unhappy and their concern is that BJP had several old Jat Sikh faces within the party but instead chose a leader who joined BJP after spending a long time in Congress however the appointment of Dhillon was part of BJP's larger strategy to improve its image among rural voters farmers and Jat Sikh community.

The party has struggled to make significant gains in Punjab's villages especially after farmers' movement and BJP hopes Dhillon's rural background and influence in Malwa region will help improve its position however despite these efforts BJP is still finding it difficult to make a major breakthrough among Punjab's rural voters and political analysts say the party has not yet been able to create a strong narrative that it can independently challenge major players like Aam Aadmi Party and Congress in Punjab.

Unable to set a strong narrative

Many voters who may be willing to support BJP are still unsure whether the party can perform strongly in Punjab without an alliance and the uncertainty about BJP's ability to fight and win on its own remains a challenge.

Missing Chief Ministerial face

Another major issue is absence of a clear Chief Ministerial face.

BJP has several prominent leaders in Punjab including former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, former state president Sunil Jakhar and Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu however the party has not projected any one leader as its chief ministerial candidate and political observers say that voters often like clarity about leadership before elections but at present, BJP appears to be relying on collective leadership rather than a single face and adding to the list of woes some analysts also point out that BJP does not currently have a strong Dalit leader with statewide influence comparable to leaders such as former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Unable to tap in Punjab’s core issues

The party is also facing criticism for not raising Punjab specific issues aggressively enough at the ground level and political observers believe BJP has not been as visible on local issues as some of its rivals and has struggled to connect with voters on matters that directly affect Punjab and recent civic body election results have added to these concerns as elections were held across 104 local bodies including eight municipal corporations where the results showed AAP maintaining a clear lead.

AAP won over 880 wards across Punjab while Congress secured 355 wards, Shiromani Akali Dal won 178 wards and BJP managed around 153 wards only.

Presence in Pathankot & Abohar

While BJP's overall performance remained weak the party performed relatively better in areas such as Pathankot and Abohar however the results still highlighted long road ahead for BJP before 2027 Assembly elections.

The balancing act

BJP has also attempted to balance its political outreach as recently BJP just nominated national general secretary Tarun Chugh who is one of party's prominent Hindi faces to Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh and political observers view this very move as part of party's effort to maintain balance among different social and political groups while strengthening its organisation ahead of next Assembly elections but for now BJP's leadership continues to work on expanding its support base in Punjab however questions about internal unity, leadership projection, rural outreach and electoral strategy remain key challenges as the party prepares for the 2027 battle.
