50% Supreme Court staff test positive for Covid-19, judges to work from home

Sources said that courtrooms and the entire premise are now being sanitised.

India is soaring with the coronavirus second wave, which has now hit the Supreme Court. At least 50% of its staff has tested positive for Covid-19. The hearing will be done through video conferencing from home and currently, the entire court premises, including courtrooms, is now being sanitised. 

Several benches will today sit an hour later than their scheduled time. 

Officials, however, said that situation is not worrisome. 

On Saturday, about 44 out of 90 staff who were subjected to tests turned to be positive for covid, creating panic amongst the judges. 

As per information, all the judges will carry video hearings from their respective homes. 

All the benches were scheduled to sit at 10.30 am and now will sit at 11.30 am. While those scheduled to sit at 11 am will sit at noon in Supreme Court, today.

"Most of my staff and law clerks have tested positive," said one judge.

Earlier, some judges had contracted covid but recovered subsequently. 

On Monday, India reported 1,68,912 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the 6th highest single-day rise in seven days, taking the total tally in the country to 1,35,27,717 and 904 fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours, according to the latest Health Ministry data published this morning.
