Having tea at a roadside stall, mingling and doing bhangra with students, halting convoy to wish newly married couple and curtailing his security cover, the newly appointed Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is doing everything to connect with people, which his predecessor Capt Amarinder Singh chose not to put on the priority list.
In an obvious attempt to distinguish himself from Captain Amarinder, ‘commoner' Channi is portraying himself in public as ‘unlike' a chief minister.
Channi, a prominent but low-profile Sikh Dalit leader was appointed as Chief Minister of Punjab on September 20. The obvious reason for his elevation was to woo the Dalit voters, meanwhile appeasing Jatt Sikh and Hindu communities by appointing Sukhjinder Randhawa and OP Soni as Deputy CMs.
In his very first press conference after being named CM, Channi recalled his humble origins. He thanked Rahul Gandhi and said that the party has elevated an “Aam Aadmi’ to the top post. A teary-eyed Channi, 58, detailed his poor background, how his family lived in a mud house and his struggles as a former rickshaw puller.

While visiting Amritsar to pay obeisance at Sri Darbar Sahib, Channi along with his deputies Randhawa and Soni, and PPCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu stopped at Giani Tea Stall on Cooper Road. Projecting image of an ‘aam aadmi’ Channi sat on a wooded bench by the side of the road, had tea, and interacted and got clicked with locals.

During his visit to DAV University at Jalandhar, he mingled with students. Exhibiting utmost humility, Channi shook the hands of every student and staff member who tried to meet him. He even ignored security protocol to not disappoint anyone.

CM Channi's photo of him hugging a member of a police band, presumably after guard of honour, went viral as well. He was also seen hugging Bhangra dancers on the stage as he danced with students of Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar at the song ‘Nachde Punjabi’.

Apart from this, Channi even announced a curtail in his security cover saying, “I am one of you and I don't need an army of 1000 security personnel to protect me from my own brethren.” During his address to the gathered crowd, he mentioned that he is not fond of a luxurious lifestyle and the heavy security is a waste of government resources.
While firmly standing by farmers protesting against the centre’s three controversial farm laws, CM Channi expressed solidarity with families of those who lost their lives during the agitation. Channi visited the house of labourer, late Sukhpal Singh (30) at Mandi Kalan village, Bathinda and handed over a government job letter to his elder brother, Natha Singh. He also had dal roti at late Sukhpal Singh’s house.

CM Channi also handed over an appointment letter to Gurmail Singh, father of Jashanpreet Singh (18) who died at the Tikri border.
In his recent attempt at projecting himself as a ‘commoner’, Channi stopped the vehicle during his visit to Bathinda after seeing a newly married couple and offered them ‘shagun’. The video of the instance was also posted on Twitter by the official CMO Punjab account.
"During his visit to Bathinda today, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi spotted a newly married couple at village Mandi Kalan and suddenly stopped his vehicle to convey his best wishes," read the caption.

CM also tasted some sweet dish carried in a 'parat' (platter) by the family.
