The student wing of the Bhartiya Janata Party, AkhilBharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), lost the students' union polls in theMahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth on Thursday, which happens to be Prime MinisterNarendra Modi's constituency.

The ABVP had lost the students' union elections in 2017also.

NSUI candidates won the posts of the Vice President andGeneral Secretary, giving a major jolt to the ABVP which faced a humiliatingdefeat.

NSUI candidates also won six of the eight seats asfaculty representatives.

The victory of the NSUI and the defeat of the ABVP assumesignificance since Varanasi is the parliamentary constituency of Prime MinisterNarendra Modi.

The Congress sees the victory of the NSUI "as a signof changing mood of the youth" and is looking forward to bigger gains inthe 2022 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
