HISTORY AND TRADITION OF ALL SOUL’S DAY

All Souls’ Day in the Christian tradition was popularised by French monks who dedicated a day for remembering the dead in 998 AD. It began as a local feat but soon spread throughout the Catholic Church during the same century. The key notion associated with the tradition is purgatory. On this day, Bells are tolled to comfort those departed souls that are being cleansed and candles are lit to guide the poor souls fading in the darkness.

Several countries celebrate the day by distributing cakes among children, singing and prayer meets are organised.

All Souls’ Day was established by Saint Odilo of Cluny in Cluny, a small town located in the eastern part of France. The place became the most important monastery in Europe.

It is said that Saint Odilo worked hard to transform the monastic practices not only at Cluny but also across other European nations.

On this day, the Catholic Church teaches about the purification of souls in purgatory.

In the west, the custom of praying for the dead is inscribed in the catacombs and is still widely practised. Saying enough prayers for the peace of the souls who have departed in the early rituals, is commonly known as commemorations of the dead.
