Amarnath Yatra cancelled in light of Covid pandemic; Online "aarti" for devotees

Keeping the Covid pandemic in view, the annual Amarnath pilgrimage has been cancelled this year, however, "aarti" will be facilitated online for the devotees.

Keeping the Covid pandemic in view, the annual Amarnath pilgrimage has been cancelled this year, however, "aarti" will be facilitated online for the devotees. The yatra that is held for 56 days, to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Lord Shiva, was scheduled to start on June 28 from the twin tracks of Pahalgam in Anantnag and Baltal in Gunderbal was to culminate on August 28, but was delayed due to the outbreak of the pandemic. 

Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha after discussions with the shrine board has announced that the yatra will remain dismissed this year. 

A statement issued by Raj Bhavan, Government of Jammu & Kashmir said: "Based upon the circumstances, Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board decided that it is not advisable to hold and conduct this year's Shri Amarnathji Yatra and expressed its regret to announce the cancellation of Yatra 2020."

"To keep the religious sentiments alive, the Board shall continue live telecast/virtual darshan of morning & evening aarti. The traditional rituals shall be carried out as per past practice. Chhadi Mubarak shall be facilitated by the Government,'' the statement read.
