One of India's biggest road infrastructure projects, the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway, is gradually progressing towards its completion and now reaches a figure of more than 85% complete, as per recent reports from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Major developments till May 2025

Since its previous comprehensive update in December 2024, there has been significant progress:

The completion percentage of construction has passed 85%, the rest of which is in Rajasthan and Gujarat and is nearing the last stages of paving and structural build-up.

Land acquisition and bridge works across rivers in Rajasthan are complete, tackling one of the project's first earlier bottlenecks.

Over 1,100 km of the expressway is motorable now, with trial runs on important stretches such as Bhatinda to Jodhpur and Ajmer to Rajkot.

Toll plazas, rest stops, and service infrastructure are also being built side by side to handle the upcoming traffic movement.

Route and connectivity highlights

The expressway connects four important states: Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Important cities along the route are

  • Amritsar, Bhatinda (Punjab)
  • Sirsa, Hisar (Haryana)
  • Ajmer, Jodhpur, Barmer (Rajasthan)
  • Rajkot, Jamnagar (Gujarat)

The Bharatmala Pariyojana encompasses this corridor and has been placed strategically to enable the passage of freight, especially among northern industrial metropolises and Gujarat's refineries and ports.

Economic and industrial influence

Experts believe that the expressway would prove to be a game changer in intra-regional trade.

  • Logistics would go down by 20–25%
  • especially for exporters and producers.
  • Petrochemical, agricultural, and textile industries would enjoy faster delivery cycles.
  • The enhanced road infrastructure will gain directly
  • Punjab's agro-industries and Gujarat's petrochemical exports via Jamnagar.

Completion timeline

NHAI has ensured that the project is preparing for its December 2025 inauguration. With monsoon preparations already in place to cause minimal delays, it is hoped that trial runs and safety audits will begin by October 2025, before the official inauguration.

The Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway is not just a road — it's an economic lifeline that will join up regions, spur industries, and cut down travel time by half. As the finishing line approaches, this project is proof of India's push towards modern, efficient, and future-proof infrastructure.
