APJ Kalam’s Birth Anniversary: Real-life stories, which made him people’s president

He was the most lovable President of India and he served the nation between 2002 and 2007 and was elected by both the then ruling party BJP and opposition party INC.

Former President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam is known for his kindness and knowledge. Missile Man was popular among all and was the kindest president, because of which was also known as “People’s President”. 


On his birthday, we have bought some real-life stories to inspire you, motivate you and uplift you. 


1.) In 2013, he offered an Indian student to have dinner from his plate. Some students went to meet APJ Kalam at his dining table during the International Space Development Conference (ISDC) in San Diego, California. At the time, he showed a kind gesture and offered food from his plate to the students. After Kalam insisted one of the students took a leaf of spinach from his plate. While sharing the experience the student said, “Till this day I take it to be a leaf of inspiration from him and the best dinner I could ever imagine”.

2.) He said no to ‘broken glass on walls’ as it may harm the birds. He was working on a construction project with DRDO. At that time, someone suggested broken glass on the walls, when asked what to do to ensure security around a certain building. He immediately denied and said, “The birds cannot perch on the wall. Think of something else.” 


3.) He sent a ‘thank you’ note to a kid, who sketched him. A six-year-old boy drew and mailed a sketch of the former president after reading his book ‘Wings of Fire’. Surprisingly, a few days later he received a thank you card by APJ Kalam. The card read, “Dear Naman Narain, Thank you for your nice drawing. With best wishes, from, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam”.

4.) President invited a roadside cobbler and a small hotel owner as “Presidential Guests,” to the Raj Bhavan of Kerala during his first visit to Trivandrum. 


On his birthday, the nation celebrates “World Students’ Day,” annually. APJ Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.
