As banks will remain closed for the next four days, people are advised to get done with the important bank work today.

However, upcoming bank closure due to holidays and strikes will not interrupt the banking activities on mobile and the internet. Also, the four day closure will only be observed in Shillong and in other areas, banks will be shut for three days.

Bank unions have called for a two-day strike, which will begin on December 16 (Thursday). The strike which will end on December 17 (Friday) is to protest proposed bank privatisation.

On December 18th (Saturday), Shillong will observe the death anniversary of U Soso Tham. On December 19, falls Sunday.

About the strike: According to Sanjay Das, general secretary of the All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), if the government does not renounce its proposal to privatise banks, a series of other agitational events would be held in addition to the two-day strike.

Mr Das claimed that privatising PSBs will affect priority sectors of the economy as well as credit flow to self-help groups and the rural economy.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated in her 2021 budget speech that two public sector banks will be privatised during the current fiscal year.
