What is this celestial phenomenon?

Sun Halo is a celestial phenomenon in which a perfect rainbow ring is made around the sun, in its centre. It is also known as the 22-degree circular halo of the sun and often the moon.

When the ring is formed around the moon then it is termed as ‘winter ring’ or ‘moon ring’.

It occurs when the sun rays get deflected or refracted by the hexagonal ice crystals present in the atmosphere. In the other words, the circular rainbow is formed when there is moisture in the sky near the sun, the moon or any celestial bodies.

This phenomenon is common in cold countries but in India, it is rare and unpredictable.

There is old weather saying related to the beautiful phenomenon which says, “Ring around the moon means it will rain soon.”
