To enhance the district’s preparedness for emergency situations, the Jalandhar administration will conduct a mock blackout drill on May 31, 2025, from 9:30 PM to 10:00 PM. The initiative is part of a broader civil defense exercise and aims to test the district’s response mechanisms during a potential crisis.
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal informed us that prior to the blackout, a siren will be sounded across the district. During this period, all lights — including household, commercial, and public streetlights — will be switched off, except those required for emergency services. Municipal authorities have also been directed to ensure that street lighting is disabled during the drill.
Residents have been advised not to use inverters or generators during the blackout. Dr. Aggarwal also emphasized that outdoor lights should be switched off and urged citizens to fully cooperate with the administration. To support the drill, additional sirens have been installed throughout the city. In case of any issue, the district control room can be contacted at 0181-2224417.
Highlighting the purpose of the exercise, Dr. Aggarwal said the blackout drill is a proactive step in preparing for emergency situations and is not a reason to panic. “This is purely a preparedness activity meant to assess response strategies. Public cooperation and adherence to safety measures is essential,” he stated.
He further advised residents not to travel unnecessarily during the blackout window. If travel is essential, vehicles should be parked on the roadside with lights turned off during the blackout timeframe.
Before the blackout, a mock drill will also be held at 6:00 PM near Jawahar Park, Jalandhar Cantonment, at the Cantonment Board office. This drill will involve assessing not only emergency services but also ensuring the supply of food, medical aid, and other essentials.
According to Dr. Aggarwal, the mock drill will involve multiple key response teams, including the NDRF, SDRF, BSF, Army, and other critical services departments. The goal is to simulate real-time emergency situations and ensure the readiness of the administration to implement effective security and relief measures.
In conclusion, the Deputy Commissioner appealed to the citizens of Jalandhar to cooperate fully and responsibly and to follow all instructions and safety advisories issued during the exercise. “This is a vital step toward building a resilient and well-prepared community,” Dr. Aggarwal added.
