Can you travel during a blackout? Operation Shield drill in border states sparks questions

The Punjab administration has noted that almost every district of the state will be witnessing a blackout; however, the timing of the same might vary.

In a major development focused on the enhancement of national security, a mock drill will be conducted in a few administrations of India. As per the reports, Punjab is one of the states that will be witnessing a blackout on May 31, 2025. The Punjab administration has noted that almost every district of the state will be witnessing a blackout; however, the timing of the same might vary. 

However, the major question in the minds of the general public is related to traveling during the blackout. To this, the administration has stated that people must AVOID traveling at the time of blackout as it is not a safe thing to do. 

This concern was raised by Truescoop News, and notably, the administration mentioned that it is not safe to travel during a blackout. However, if traveling is compulsory, then the authorities have suggested switching off the lights of the cars and parking their cars for a minute. 

The district-wise division timing of blackout - 

According to the Punjab administration, the major districts of Punjab, including Jalandhar, will be observing a blackout during the below-mentioned hours - 

Jalandhar -

According to the announcement by Jalandhar Deputy Commission Dr Himanshu Aggarwal, the district will conduct a mock blackout drill on May 31, 2025, from 9:30 PM to 10:00 PM. 

Amritsar - 

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Major Amit Sareen confirmed the local schedule and stated that a mock drill will be conducted from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Dussehra Ground, Ranjit Avenue, and this will be followed by a city-wide blackout from 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Hoshiarpur - 

The local administration of Hoshiarpur has announced that the district will be hosting a blackout for 15 minutes from 8:00 PM to 8:15 PM. However, to mark the commencement of the blackout, a siren will sound at 7:58 PM. 

Gurdaspur - 

The local authorities have confirmed that the timing for the blackout across the Gurdaspur district will be the same as Hoshiarpur and Amritsar, i.e., from 8:00 PM to 8:15 PM.
