Canada Day 2021: From history, Significance to Events, here’s all you need to know about the day

Canada Day is celebrated every year on July 1, this day celebrates the creation of Canada. The day is also known as ‘Dominion Day’.

Every year, Canada Day is celebrated on July 1. A national holiday is observed on the occasion of Canada Day, this holiday was firstly observed in the year 1879 but started a catch after 1917. Constitution Act joined the three provinces into one to form Canada. These three provinces were – Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Canada province, which was later divided into Ontario and Quebec. Canadians celebrate the day traditionally and with full enthusiasm. 

The day is celebrated with parades, display of the national flag, the singing of the National Anthem, “O Canada”, fireworks, concerts, carnivals, fairs and picnics.

HISTORY of the Canada Day:

Officially Canada was formed on July 1, 1867, but got independence from British rule in the year 1982. Till the 50th anniversary, it was celebrated just like a normal day, but the anniversary celebrations catch on in the year 1917. 

In 1946, a bill was made to change the name of the holiday but the arguments over the new name became hinder in the bill. 

The growth in the spirit of Canadian patriotism was first seen on the 100th anniversary of the official nation’s creation day, in 1967 the people started celebrating the day with great enthusiasm and emotions. By that time, the holiday was observed as Canada Day and the official day was adopted in October 1982, when the Canadian constitution was patriated by the Canada Act 1982.

The main aim to celebrate the day is to show off the national pride and celebrate the creation of the nation (Canada).

HOW Canadians celebrate Canada Day:

Canada Day is celebrated in various ways but the first and the foremost tradition is a parade. Parades are carried out at every nook and corner of the country, from cities to towns to villages. Other traditions that are picking up include – picnics, festivals, sporting events and fireworks. The major celebrations took place in Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Victoria. 

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have an established group called the RCMP Musical Ride who performs equestrian drills for the public throughout Canada.

EVENTS on Canada Day 2021:

As the restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic have eased, therefore, Canadians have more than a reason to celebrate the day. 

Some of the events are at:

1. City of Edmonton: In Edmonton, the fireworks were planned to be set off over the river valley at 11 pm. It was choreographed to the music by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, which would be played on CBC Radio 93.9 FM and 740 AM. 

The program would be broadcasted on television for anyone who wishes to see the event from home. 

2. St. Albert: The city of St. Albert has scheduled many Canada Day activities between noon to 4 pm. The events would include family-friendly entertainment in the trails and parks spaces around the Downtown. An event – Fizzlewit’s Fairy Finding Tour is also organized at Downtown, in which the families could search for hidden magical creatures.

This year, the city is looking for alternative dates and locations for the fireworks. 

3. Strathcona County: Strathcona County has hosted a week-long festival, which would end on July 4. On July 1, it would be hosting a drive-thru pancake breakfast in the Festival Place parking lot. Another meal would be organized from 3 pm to 9 pm in the form of a Food Truck Rally at the Kinsmen Leisure Centre parking lot.
