Canada to suspend passenger flights from India for another 30 days, Pakistan flights allowed: Report

Concerned about the further spread of Covid-19 in the nation, Canada is mulling to extend the suspension of directs Indian flights for another 30 days.

However, there has been no such official announcement, the Canadian government tried to disseminate the information well in advance to the Indian govt.

Earlier the suspension was scheduled to conclude on April 22 however, an overwhelming increase in the Covid-19 cases made the Canadian govt to extend ban by May 21 to June 21 and now until July 21.

This move of Justin Trudeau is said to have taken under the pressure from the state representatives after several cases of Delta variant were detected in their country.

The Delta variant that originated in India has spread globally infecting thousands at once. Also, the Canadian govt consider it to be 150% more transmissible than the original virus.

It is pertinent to mention here that before the travel suspension, both Air India and Air Canada were operating daily flights from New Delhi to Toronto and Vancouver through an air bubble set up in summer 2020.

While Indian flights will remain suspended, Canada is pondering to resume flight services from Pakistan.

Omar Alghabra, Candian Minister of Transport said, “Based on the public health data, we will not be renewing the flight ban between Canada and Pakistan.”

 “Air travelers from Pakistan will be required to obtain a COVID-19 molecular test in Pakistan to board a flight to Canada,” he added.

Apart from this, the Canadian govt is likely to ease the norms on Monday which include exemption for the mandatory hotel quarantine for citizens and permanent residents who are fully vaccinated.

However, as of now, those arriving in Canada will have to carry a negative RT-PCR test report before boarding and they will undergo another test on arrival and will remain in the designated hotel by the time result is available. Even with another negative result, they have to complete the full 14-day self-isolation period.
