Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh formally quit Congress today, on November 2. While tendering his resignation from the party, the former Congress leader wrote a long letter to party president Sonia Gandhi saying he was “deeply hurt” by her and her children’s conduct.

Announcing the same on Twitter, Capt Amarinder said, “I have today sent my resignation to @INCIndia President Ms Sonia Gandhi ji, listing my reasons for the resignation.”

He also declared the name of his party that will contest against Congress in the upcoming Punjab 2022 elections.

‘Punjab Lok Congress’ is the name of the new party. The registration is pending approval with the @ECISVEEP. The party symbol will be approved later,” read the tweet.

In his six-page long resignation letter to Ms Gandhi, Capt said, “despite my profound reservations and over the unanimous advice of almost all the MPs from Punjab, you chose to appoint an acolyte of the Pakistani deep state Navjyot Singh Sindhu who had publicly hugged the Pakistan Army Chief Gen Bajwa and Prime Minister Imran Khan, as the President of the Punjab Congress Committee.”

He further went on to say, “I actually felt deeply hurt by your conduct and that of your children who I still deeply love as much as my own children, having known their father, since we were in school together since 1954, which is for 67 years now.”

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Indian National Congress in the interest of my state and my country,” concluded Captain.

The major development comes just months ahead of state assembly elections next year.

Captain Amarinder had earlier declared to quit Congress and launch his new party that will ally with BJP ‘if the farmers' issue is resolved.’ Following his statements, several congress leaders had criticised Amarinder and questioned his “secular politics.”

“Humiliated” Captain Amarinder was ousted from CM’s chair on September 18 after facing multiple revolts from his arch-rival Navjot Singh Sidhu and his aides. Charanjit Channi, a Sidhu-loyalist was made CM after the dismissal of Capt.

Since then Amarinder Singh was launching attacks against party high command, Sidhu and his confidants and today finally resigned to field a strong contender against his arch-nemesis.
