Tokyo Olympics 2020: Capt Amarinder's Tweet Praising Punjab Players For Making It Into Semi-Finals Sparks Controversy

The Indian men's hockey team defeated Great Britain 3-1 today to advance to the Tokyo Olympics semi-finals. This was the first time in 49 years that something like this had happened.As everyone in India celebrated this historical moment, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh also praises Punjab players who scored goals in the quarterfinal match against Great Britain.


Tweeting on his Twitter handle, he congratulated the team, and named out the 3 players who scored a goal and happy to say that all three of them were from Punjab.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh tweeted, “ Stellar performance by the Indian Men’s Hockey team at #TokyoOlympics to beat Great Britain by 3-1 & entering Olympic top 4 after 41 years. Happy to note that all 3 goals were scored by Punjab players Dilpreet Singh, Gurjant Singh & Hardik Singh. Congratulations…go for Gold!”.

In a tweet, he said that Dilpreet Singh, Gurjant Singh, and Hardik Singh- these were the three punjabi players who scored all 3 goals.

Although the tweet was to congratulate team India for his stellar performance and entering Olympics top 4 after 41 years but it sparks controversy. .

Some of the netizens contempt this tweet by saying that as all are Indian players, neither Punjabi nor Malayalam, so the tweet should be for all indian players and not only for praising only Punjabi players.

Netizens said that this was not expected from Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.They corrected how all three goals were done by the Indian players.

Social Worker and Politician from BJP party Tajinder Singh Sran said,  “Very Happy to Note All 3 goals were scored by Indian Players #TokyoOlympics2020 #hockeyindia".

Sikh netizens too pointed out how the players who made India proud were Indian first when on field.

A user named Dilpreet Singh Shergill tweeted, “BEING A SIKH , I MUST SAY THEY ARE INDIANS FIRST WHEN PLAYING OLYMPIC... If other players donot assist ball , how would they score…”.


Others said, Not expected from you Sir......Every goal was scored by an INDIAN.....Punjabis did not score... Neither did a Malayali save goals......We had an Indian Goal keeper!”.

Well, With a brilliant performance from a young team that lived like a family during the pandemic and played as a single unit in Tokyo, India made it to the medal round of the Olympic Games men's hockey tournament after a gap of 41 years, beating Great Britain 3-1 in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Victory over Belgium will put India in the final for the first time since the 1980 Moscow Olympics when they beat Spain to win their eighth and last gold medal in Olympics hockey.

It is the first time that India have reached the semifinal of Olympic hockey competition since 1972 when they won a bronze in Munich as there were no semifinals played in Moscow, with the top-two teams in the preliminary league making it to the gold-medal match while the team that finished third and fourth contested for bronze.

Forwards Dilpreet Singh, Gurjant Singh, and Hardik Singh scored for India while Sam Ward reduced the margin off an indirect penalty corner.It was a do-or-die match for team India.

Meanwhile, India will face Belgium in the semifinals on Tuesday.
