The video leak scandal at one of Punjab’s prestigious universities, Chandigarh University has left the administration and state in shock.

Earlier in the day, reports of the incident of a private video leak of 60 students by a fellow hosteller to her boyfriend erupted but were later outrightly denied by DC and SSP in a joint press conference.

Clearing the clouds on several speculations, here is our explainer in 10 points detailing what has happened in the video leak scandal so far:

• On Saturday afternoon, a girl saw the accused student sending the video to a male friend. The girl objected and informed about it fellow students.

• In the afternoon, other students of the hostel also gathered and informed the hostel warden about the matter. The students alleged that Chandigarh University management tried to suppress the matter. No action was taken in the matter till late evening. The girls were demanding the removal of the accused student from the hostel.

• At 1.30 pm, a sudden commotion started in the hostel. The girls came down to the ground and started raising slogans against the University management, prompting police to swing into action upon reaching the spot.

• The girl students alleged that the accused student was making videos of them for a long time and sent those videos to her male friend. They were demanding her removal from the hostel alongside carrying strict action against her.

• In the morning, the chairperson of the Punjab Women's Commission, DC, and SSP Mohali reached the spot and inquired about the matter.

• News about the suicide of some girl students in the morning also erupted, but SSP Vivek Soni denied it. He said that no student has attempted suicide nor any death has been reported in the matter.

• Owing to the protests, the police took the girl into custody in the early hours of Sunday and launched a detailed investigation alongside the forensic investigation of the electronic gadgets in the accused possession.

• Police said a video has been recovered from the prime accused arrested in the matter. And that video is her own. No other videos of any other student have been found in the preliminary investigation.

• The police through their preliminary investigation has revealed that the girl was sending the videos to her friend in Shimla named Sunny and have sent a team to Shimla.

• The matter has been boiling up and has invited comments from all high-profile politicians in the state including AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann. Both have taken cognizance of the matter and have assured due action into the case.
