Chennai to vaccinate ‘essential’ workers on priority

Considering the rise in covid cases in the state, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a complete lockdown from May 24 to May 31.

Vaccination is the necessary weapon to fight against the covid pandemic, on Monday, Chennai Corporation in a statement said that it will vaccinate “essential” workers on a priority basis between the age of 18 and 45. 

Considering the rise in covid cases in the state, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a complete lockdown from May 24 to May 31. 

According to the civic body release, those included in the category are newspaper distributors, milk suppliers, roadside vendors, staff in grocery stores and pharmacies, auto, car and bus drivers, electricity board staff, local body staff, government staff, construction workers, those working in essential industries, teachers in schools and colleges, transport department staff, and those working in ships and airlines.

The release further recommends that organisations can contact the zonal authorities or provide details at the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Revenue & Finance) to get their staff vaccinated. 

The people who will be vaccinated by the civic administration will receive a no-objection certificate from the city corporation to travel.

Tamil Nadu is among the worst-hit states by the second wave of Coronavirus. On Monday, the state registered 34,867 new cases on COVID-19, while the death count in the state stands at 404 in the last 24 hours, taking the fatality toll to 20,468.
