Coronavirus Update: India reports 81,484 new COVID-19 cases, death toll reaches 1 lakh mark

The e-commerce giant Amazon said Thursday that nearly 20,000 of its front-line US workers have tested positive or been presumed positive for the virus that causes COVID-19

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported that India’s COVID-19 tally has reached 63,94,069 with a spike of 81,484 new cases and 1,095 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The active COVID-19 cases stands at 9,42,217 including 53,52,078 patients being cured/discharged with 99,773 deaths. Maharashtra is still the worst affected by the pandemic with 2,59,440 active cases, 11,04,426 people cured while 37,056 deaths reported by far. Active COVID-19 cases in Karnataka stand at 1,10431, including 4,92,412 patients being discharged and 8,994 deaths. Kerala is also severely affected by the disease with 72,418 active cases including 1,31,052 patients being cured and 771 deaths reported so far.

On Thursday, Amazon said that about 19,816 of its front-line US employees at Amazon and Whole Foods have tested positive for COVID-19. Amazon became a hub for household supplies during this pandemic and despite numerous confirmed cases in their warehouses across the world, Amazon resisted sharing any data on it.

In a blog post, the company said it did a "thorough analysis of data on all 1,372,000 Amazon and Whole Foods Market front-line employees across the US employed at any time from March 1 to September 19, 2020."In an interview, Dave Clark, Amazon senior vice president of global operations, previously said the total number of cases "isn't particularly useful because it's relative to the size of the building and then the overall community infection rate."

# Telangana reported 2,009 fresh COVID-19 cases, with 10 fatalities on Friday. The total number of cases is 1.95 lakhs. While Arunachal Pradesh has crossed 10,000 marks as 224 more people tested positive for COVID. 

# Kerala government has imposed section 144 of CrPC in the state, prohibiting the gathering of more than five people. A late-night order issued yesterday by Chief Secretary Vishwas Mehta said gatherings pose an impending danger of a super spread of the infection and the order shall come into force from 9.00 am on October 3 and will remain in effect till October 31.

# Hindustan Syringes and Medical Devices (HMD) has dispatched its first shipment of 56 million units of auto-disable syringes to the Covax facility. The Coax facility aims to pool in resources to accelerate the development of the most promising of the COVID-19 vaccine candidates and ensure fair distribution of vaccines.  

# Odisha recorded the highest single-day recovery of 4,380 COVID-19 patients. The number of cured people are 1.9 lakh and the recovery rate is 85.33 per cent.  17 people died in the state yesterday, taking the death toll to 859. The total number of active cases in the state are 2.22 lakh. 

#  Jharkhand's COVID-19 caseload rose to 84,664 on Friday as 1,013 more people tested positive for the infection. Eight more people succumbed to the infection, taking the state's coronavirus death toll to 721. The state now has 11,482 active coronavirus cases, while 72,461 people have been cured of the disease so far, as reported by the state health ministry. 

# The overall number of global coronaviruses has crossed the 34.2 million mark, while the deaths have increased to more than 10,21,700, according to Johns Hopkins University.
