“ COVID-19 situation is likely to grow grim in the coming months”, SC seeks report from Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam

The Supreme Court of India has directed all states, especially Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Assam to report the current status of Covid-19 cases, facilities provided in hospitals and the preparation the states are making to deal with the spike of cases in coming months.

As Covid-19 situation in the country is worsening after the festive season, the Supreme Court on Monday has asked the state governments to file reports on the current situation of coronavirus in the following states: Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Assam. These states have been asked to file affidavits on the measures and moves taken by them so far. 

The apex court has advised all states to prepare plans to tackle covid situation for coming months after several states have reported a resurgence of Covid-19 wave in November.

A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan and other three judges said, “It is time to introspect where we are lacking. Keep in mind the situation is likely to grow grim in the coming months. The situation is likely to grow grim in the coming months. We think that all states must be prepared for the coming months. In the last two weeks in November, deaths have increased in Delhi. Similar is the situation in other states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Assam among other states. We need to know the situation as on date.”

The bench was hearing a suo moto petition on the management of medical care provided to Covid-19 patients and the way the dead bodies are being treated after some news reported that bodies are lying unattended in the hospitals. According to this petition, the Court had ordered all states on June 19 and July 27 to set up expert committees and install CCTVs in Covid wards.

While most states have recorded their agreement on the above-mentioned directions, the bench at present has asked for the current position of the states keeping in mind the expected spike of Covid cases in the coming months.

The Court has also questioned the Gujarat government on how it was granting political celebrations, weddings at a time when the number of cases is increasing in the state. 

The responses have to be filed before the next date of hearing fixed for Friday.
